Building Department 313-429-1060

New - Landlord and Tenants, A Practical Guide

New - Urban Street Trees

As a new resident, we want you to be aware of the following services available in the Building Department. If you should decide to remodel, add on to your house, or build a garage, your contractor is required to get the necessary permits to do the work. In order to obtain a permit, a contractor must be licensed by the State of Michigan and registered with the City of Melvindale.

Once the permits are issued, the City's staff of trained and experienced inspectors will start the process of assisting you. Through their various inspections, the City will insure that all work will be done according to current building codes and accepted standards of good workmanship. The codes address structural, fire, electrical and mechanical safety, as well as health, security, and energy conservation. This is a distinct advantage to you, the homeowner, because you will be assured of receiving quality work and a safe final product.

If a problem does develop, the City staff will assist you by requiring the contractor to make the necessary corrections. In the unusual situation where an impasse is reached, the inspection staff will even assist in filing a complaint against the contractor with the State Department of Commerce.

Please remember that the Building Department staff is ready, willing, and able to help insure that your next project complies with the appropriate codes, and is a job well done. Always remember, the most important step in a quality remodeling job, is checking the references and past workmanship of any contractor you select. If you have any questions, feel free to call our offices at 429-1062 for the building inspector or 429-1060 for the building secretary.

Property Inspections — The City of Melvindale conducts inspections of all rental properties and sale inspections when you put your home up for sale. Call the Building Department at 429-1060 for more information.

The Building Department will be able to assist you with any questions you may have regarding Code Enforcement or Zoning Regulations and Enforcement, and to schedule your inspections. Call the Building Department at 429-1060 between 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.
